For some couples it really is “Love at First Sight”. Not so for my husband and me.
We did not like each other when we first met. Not even a little. It was more like “Dislike at First Sight”. He thought I was too meek and I thought he was too wild. We had one awkward coffee date and didn’t see each other again for over two years. A mutual friend convinced us to give it another try so we went out again. This time it was “Like at Second Sight”. Not love. Just like. But that was a good place to start.
I remember asking my married friends, “How did you know your husband was the one?” They said ridiculous things like, “I just knew” and “I couldn’t imagine my life without him” and “it just fit”. I thought they were no help at all. Then one day I discovered they were right. My now “boyfriend” and I were sitting across the table from each other sharing a piece of strawberry pie from Marie Calendar’s. I looked over and I just knew. My heart took a snap shot of the moment. This was the man with whom I would be sharing my strawberry pie and everything else for the rest of my life.
Do you want to know something silly? He was wearing a brown ski sweater that day. After we were married I discovered the sweater had been tossed into a pile designated for the Salvation Army. I snuck the sweater out and kept it in a box. Each time we moved I discovered the ski sweater in the giveaway pile once again. And every time I pulled it out and put it back in the box. That sweater marked the moment that Like Turned to Love and I never wanted to forget it. Here’s the silly part. We live in Hawaii but I still have that sweater.
One of the best parts about writing the Glenbrooke Series was dreaming up the moment when Like Turned to Love for the heroines in the stories. In Echoes it was a cup of Irish Breakfast tea that opened Wren’s eyes. In Sunsets Alissa considered altering her potato salad recipe for Brad. None of the characters shared a piece of strawberry pie but food played into their love stories and that’s why I included recipes at the back of each book.
As my little Valentine’s Day gift to you all I am giving away a copy of one of the Glenbrooke novels to 10 of you! All the details on how to enter are below.
