“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness.” Jeremiah 31:3

God’s way of pursuing us is by patiently drawing us to himself. His love letter is laced together with beautiful, soul-stirring evidence that we humans are the object of his affection. He wants us to be his.

One of the best ways to get perspective in your life is to pull back and take in the big picture. Think of all your years as a timeline. I demonstrated this recently at a women’s retreat by holding up a huge ball of yarn and pulling out just the first few inches. “This is your life,” I said. “Only this much. The rest of this yarn represents eternity.” I started pulling the yarn out of the ball. More and more and more. And even more.

Then I went back to the first few inches. “All during this short time of your life, God has been pursuing you. He is pursuing you this very minute and will continue to pursue you. He is not going to stop. What will stop one day is your heart. Your breath.”

I loved watching the women’s faces. For some it seemed to be a disturbing thought that God was not going to leave them alone. For others I could see looks of relief and confidence rising in their countenance. As they pulled back and saw the big picture they were able to see the beautiful gift of God’s tender, constant attention comfort them.

From the beginning of time until the end, God has been and will continue to woo his bride (us) because we were created to be in a growing, intimate relationship with him.

Do you feel that love? That patient wooing?

Or are you of the mindset that God is “coming after you” or “gonna’ get you”? Maybe your perspective is an earthly one. You think that since you deserve to be punished for something you did that you know broke God’s heart, His response to you should be the same as what a human’s response would be – vengeance, shunning, disgust, anger.

But that isn’t how He treats us. Never has been, never will be. The consequences are always there for our choices but God’s arms are always open as He waits for us to return to Him. James 4:8 promises us that if we draw near to God, He will draw near to us. This is one of my favorite lines in Spoken For:

God is the Relentless Lover, and we are his first love. That’s why he never stops pursuing us. He’s not a vengeful God who wants to ‘get us back’; he’s an all-powerful, loving God who wants to ‘get us back’.

My prayer for you today is that you will see the brevity of your life and draw near to God so that you can experience the sweetness of His forgiveness and the depth of His love for you.

Yes!!! So true!!! There is no greater lover, ever! Jesus who knows the depths of my heart: my flaws, my weaknesses, my needs, and who delights in overwhelming me with His faithful pursuit and love. Who changes me because of it. It’s Him, I adore!!!

Robin, I agree with Alyssa. Every time I pick up one of your books or when I just watched this video when I was supposed to be doing homework (don’t tell anybody :) ), I just see God’s love pour out of you. Spoken For, Victim of Grace, even the Sisterchicks books. God’s love just flows from you so openly and lovely. I’d love to email you personally, if that would be possible.
